5 Tips for Styling your Family Session

Are you ready for your family photoshoot?

Sometimes picking the right outfits can be as tricky as convincing your toddlers that a photoshoot is more fun than a mud puddle. As a family photographer based right here in Kimberley, BC, I’ve seen it all—from impeccable style choices to fashion faux pas that could scare away the local wildlife. Here are my top five tips to ensure your family looks their best, without any wardrobe mishaps!

1. Coordinate, Don’t Clone

While it’s tempting to dress everyone in matching denim or plaid (because nothing screams ‘family’ like matching outfits, right?), coordination is key. Choose a color scheme that complements the natural beauty of whichever location we end up choosing—think earth tones, soft pastels, or vibrant but harmonious colors. This doesn’t mean everyone wears the same shade; instead, mix and match colors that blend well together. This way, you won’t look like you’re trying to blend into the forest backdrop, unless that’s your theme (Camo Family Portraits, anyone?).

2. Comfort Trumps Style (Sorry, Fashionistas!)

It’s a family photoshoot, not a runway show in Milan. If your kids are uncomfortable in their bow ties and lace dresses, it’ll show in the photos—trust me, I’ve captured more scowls than smiles from tight collars and itchy fabrics. Dress everyone in comfortable clothes that fit well. This means you can skip the stiff new shoes and go for something that won’t leave blisters after a short walk through a meadow. These days, soft fabrics, flowy dresses and cozy chinos are a lot more available then they were in the past.

3. Accessorize Wisely

Accessories can add a pop of personality to your photos, but beware of going overboard. A statement necklace or a funky hat can enhance the outfit, but too many accessories can make it look like your jewelry box exploded. And remember, nothing ruins a beautiful family portrait like a neon Spiderman watch that your son refuses to take off. Let the kids know they can put their favourite accessories back on AFTER the session. Although, when we’re talking about sentimental things like a favourite stuffy, or blankey, those are always welcomed and encouraged. Those are things we’re trying to remember! Not the worn out sweatpants…

4. Plan for the Weather (Especially in Kimberley!)

Kimberley’s weather can be as unpredictable as a two-year-old’s mood—sunny one minute and cloudy the next. Layering is a great strategy. A cute cardigan or stylish jacket that can be easily removed allows for quick adjustments to sudden temperature changes. Plus, layers add texture and depth to your photos, which brings me to my next point.

5. Textures and Patterns are Your Friends (But Don’t Let Them Fight!)

Textures like lace, knit, denim, and tweed can add a lot of interest to your photos. Patterns are great too, but make sure they aren’t competing for attention. If mom wears a floral dress, dad might want to stick to a solid color that complements it, rather than introducing an opposing pattern like wide stripes or polka dots. Remember, you want to complement each other, not start a pattern war.
